She received her DVM degree from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and completed an internship in small animal medicine and a residency in small animal internal medicine at Purdue University. She achieved board certification in small animal internal medicine (ACVIM). Dr. Waters received her PhD in Physiology at the University of Missouri. After practicing in a specialty private practice in Irving, Texas, Dr. Waters went on to head the medical division of a law firm in Dallas, obtained her law degree from Southern Methodist University, and practiced law for five years before returning to veterinary specialty practice. She accepted a position as Medical Director with a specialty practice group in Maryland in 2020 and retired from clinical practice in 2023. Dr. Waters has served as an HumaneVMA state representative since 2017, first in Texas and then in Maryland. Her contributions to the HumaneVMA include working on the veterinary student scholarship selection committee and lobbying for animal welfare in the Maryland legislature. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education appointed her as a veterinary college site visitor, beginning in 2025. Dr. Waters enjoys spending time with her large family (including her rescue dog, Pearl and three cats, Tortilla, Bear and Coco), hiking, cooking and reading.
